The Movies of 2001
|
- Dec 23 - "Lord of the Rings-Fellowship of the Ring" - Most excellent. 3 hours and some minutes, and relatively
faithful to the book. There were some changes, for the sake of passing information to those people in the audience who
hadn't read the book.
- Dec 11 - Doh! I did go see "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" over the Thanksgiving Holidays.
Since Mom and I have both read the books, and Dad doesn't like to go see movies, we went together. They stayed
pretty true to the book (a good thing) and the special effects were amazing. Pretty much just as we had
imagined it. Now I can't wait to see "Fellowship of the Rings"!
- Sep 1 - Hey, today's date is 9/1/1! I went to see "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"
and I have to say, I enjoyed it much. Lot's of movie jokes, lots of Kevin Smith humor, and plenty of "Jay".
Definitely worth a matinee on a rainy day. And what an odd mix of people in the theater. People
from all walks of life! Just goes to show, you never know who the fans are.
- Aug 27 - Finally broke down and watched "Hannibal" and I have to agree. All the blood and
guts were totally unnecessary. It actually takes away from an otherwise good, suspenseful movie.
Ah, Sir Anthony Hopkins. What an actor.
- Aug 18 - Well, a week of house-sitting gave me some free (away from computer) time. Did I use it
for anything productive? No, I watched some movies. The only one I'll mention here is "The Pledge"
with Jack Nicholson and a whole list of cameos. A cop (Jack) is retiring. A dead child is discovered the night
of his retirement party. He obsesses about the crime and discovers other things. The time span of the
story is a year or two. It's a well done movie, but without the expected ending. But a cool ending, anyway!
And you just can't go wrong with Jack
- July 15 - On the advice of my attorney, I watched "Detroit Rock City". He's a KISS fan,
don't you know. Well, it was worth watching, and I suppose if I were a greater KISS fan than
I am, I would have liked it even more. There were some cute moments.
- July 8 - I finally broke down and watched "The Green Mile" and enjoyed it as much as
most people apparently had. I had forgotten it was a Stephen King story.
- June 26 - Finally, "Unbreakable" came out for rental. While not really necessary to see
on the big screen, it's definitely worth watching. Same group that brought us "The Sixth Sense", so,
yes, it has a twist ending. But the ending makes sense, too. And the extra features on the second disc
of the set are also worth watching. Do it. Go rent this one.
- June 25 - had heard about it. Put off seeing it. But I finally watched "Cast Away".
And I'm glad I did. This is a damn fine movie. Never gets too slow. And of course, Tom Hanks
does a fine job of acting. See this one.
- June 23 - Went with some guy friends to see Boob Raider, er, ahem "Tomb Raider".
And I have to admit, it was all my fault. I talked them into going. Maybe I was expecting
too much, something along the lines of Indiana Jones. But on the other hand, it was a good
action/adventure flick. Seeing it on the big screen definitely helped. And of course, watching
Angelina Jolie, and her enhancements, bounce across the screen was good. But I'm glad we went to
the matinee. It's hardly worth $5, let alone $8.
- June 11 - I spent the weekend back home catching up on movies:
- I rented "Mission to Mars" just to see out of curiousity. It was basically a special effects movie with a
weekish story line, but a good one for a saturday morning.
- I rented "Red Planet" for the contrast. Another weak story line. But a watchable movie. But of course,
I'm easily amused.
- I went to see "Animal" in the theater. Thank god I went to the matinee. It's a date movie with just enough
"juvenile" humor to keep the guys happy, too. Nothing too tasteless, but nothing laugh out loud hilarious, either. And
then there's the romantic stuff, too.
- There was one other movie I rented, but I can't recall what it was. That should tell you something.
- May 19 - Another pleasant surprise. Mom and one of her friends were in the mood to see a movie
and I recommended "Shrek". I even wanted to go see it too, mostly out of curiousity. I must
say I was glad I went. I laughed my ass off. Sure, there's stuff for kids because that's the largest
marketing income audience. But there was plenty of adult humor there, too. My most memorable line was
"Sheesh, would you warn me next time you do that? I had my mouth open and everything!" Go see this one!
I know I want to add that DVD to my collection when I can.
- May 4 - Another Friday night at the apartment. Watched "Crazy in Alabama" on the
recommendation of one of my female friends. I had been led to believe it was a comedy, but it's
a comedy sort of like "Twin Peaks". However, it was a good movie and Melanie Griffith deserves
kudos for her performance, as well as the kid that played her favorite nephew, Lucas Black. I see
good things in that boy's future.
- April something near the end of the month - I watched "Men of Honor". This is a pretty good movie, even
if it is a "feel good" type. But the story is good, and based on actual events. And Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr.
seemed to work well together. I recommend watching it.
- April or March - I finally got around to watching "Fight Club" and was pleasantly surprised. Damn good flick
with an unexpected story line. Totally not what I expected from the previews. I have to thank my
brother for twisting my arm to watch this one. My brother is just chock full of surprises.
- Feb 10 - Well, since the shop would have my car most of the day, putting tires on it, I decided to take
in a movie at the nearby theater. I saw "What Women Want". I enjoyed Helen Hunt's performance.mmmmmmm.
And Mel Gibson did well. But they obviously did not have the chemistry that was apparent with Jack Nicholson in
"As Good as it Gets". But this movie suffers from a typical flaw. The women end up changing the man for the better.
And that just doesn't happen in real life. Nice idea. But I guess that's why it's called "fiction", huh?
- Jan 26 - I laughed out loud at this summary in the local paper's television listing:
" 'For a Few Dollars More' - Early Sergio Leone spaghetti western has Clint reprising his "Man with No Name" role from
"A Fist Full of Dollars" and engaging in much frontier carnage."
Ah, the Movies of 2000!
