This way back to the Ranch Nothing like waking up to a blizzard

January 2002 was an interesting month. And a scary one for some of the people who lived here in January 2000. As you may recall, I didn't move back to Raleigh until August 2000, so it didn't really affect me. Anyway, on January 2, 2002 we had a bit of a blizzard here in Raleigh. Sort of reminded me of the blizzard of '93 in Atlanta. 12 inches of snow fell during a day-and-a-half period. I was lucky enough to have food and beers an cigarettes. I never lost power. Just got a little cabin fever. But, it was fun watching it snow. I think I stayed inside most of the time. The picture below was taken the afternoon of January 3rd. What you can't really tell is that just behind those trees is a highway. A four-lane highway with a wooded median. And there are NO cars on it. The snow would fall/blow so hard at times I couldn't even see the trees that are visible in this picture.

Photos just don't catch how thick the snow really was

Anway, I stayed busy around the apartment. Got it pretty clean as I recall. Read a book or two. Watched some of the movies I own. But I had to get out of the house by Jan 6th. Besides, there was one of the "computer" shows going on in town. Roads were openning up slowly. After a careful check, I determined that I could probably get downtown to the so-called show. But this kind of thing takes planning. I had to make sure the car could make the trip. And I had to dig it out from under the snow. Luckily, I remembered which lump was mine. About half-way through the uncovering, I remembered that I have a camera, and should take a picture:

That's about 9 inches of snow on top of my car

I think it was a good idea to uncover the car, and clear the ice from behind my car the day before I left for the computer show. The computer "show" itself was a terrific waste of time and five dollars admission. A glorified garage sale is more appropriate. And, a week later, you couldn't even tell it had snowed. Damn, I'm glad I live in the South.
